About Kherson

Kherson, situated in Ukraine, serves as a pivotal port city and the administrative hub of Kherson Oblast. Nestled alongside the Black Sea and bordered by the Dnieper River, Kherson boasts a significant shipbuilding industry, endowing it with the status of a crucial regional economic hub. As one of Ukraine’s large cities, its population was 279,131 prior to the 2022 Russian invasion.

Between March and November 2022, Russian forces occupied the city as a part of their invasion of Ukraine. Their occupation was brutal. However, on 11 November 2022, Ukrainian forces successfully reclaimed control of the city of the right bank of the Dnieper. The left bank remained occupied by the retreating Russian forces. In June 2023, the city experienced deadly flooding due to the destruction of the nearby Kakhovka Dam. Presently, the city faces constant shelling from Russian forces entrenched themselves across the Dnieper River.
