About Izyum
Izyum is a city situated on the Donets River in Kharkiv Oblast, eastern Ukraine. It functions as the administrative center of Izyum Raion and hosts the administration of Izyum urban hromada, one of Ukraine's hromadas. Located approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) southeast of Kharkiv, the administrative center of the oblast, Izyum had an estimated population of 44,979 in 2022, a number which significantly decreased due to the fighting, occupation and destruction in the region. The city was occupied by Russian forces in April 2022 during the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. A brutal five-month-long occupation followed, during which villagers bore witness to war crimes and subjugation under the occupying administration and military forces. Izyum was later recaptured by Ukrainian forces during the 2022 Kharkiv counteroffensive in September 2023.
