Design Evolution

Insulate Ukraine founder, Harry, developed the initial Insulate Ukraine window at MakeSpace, Cambridge, following his time on the ground after the full-scale invasion. These windows were insulating, shatterproof and light-giving, three key needs not being met by current humanitarian repairs. By the winter of 2023, our first window was installed in Izyum.

First IU Window Design

Since then, we have focused on constant, user-led evolution. Our Nikopol team spearheaded the second iteration, driven by their firsthand experience in the field:

"After 12 months of installing the original design, we identified two key challenges: the windows lacked transparency and didn't fully secure the buildings. Through the 'Renovation' project, our team collaborated to ensure the people we serve have the warmest, brightest homes possible. Within a month, we developed this new version, and we are thrilled to see it rolled out across all our teams."

This second iteration features transparent PET sheeting, superior sealing, and a streamlined frame, making it more effective and aesthetically pleasing.

Now, we are launching Version 3: a fully self-installable window that can be sent via post. This innovation allows us to bypass logistics hurdles and deliver vital aid to high-risk areas faster than ever before.

The V3 window is the latest step in proving a simple but powerful belief: that the humanitarian space deserves the same culture of innovation and iteration that drives the best of industry, grounded always in local context and the input of the people closest to the need. The result is aid that speaks to the reality on the ground, because it was shaped by it.
