Izyum government partners with Insulate Ukraine to fix 6,000 broken windows.

Insulate Ukraine (IU) has developed a replacement for shattered windows in Ukraine. The solution which has been going through validation will now be used to repair 6,000 broken windows in the city of Izyum, Ukraine. Insulate Ukraine are now working to set up a team of dedicated volunteers and a material supply chain to provide those most in need with their solution.

With temperatures already below freezing, this is a major step forward in helping Ukrainians stay warm over winter. The windows cost £10 each and are capable of providing superior insulation to double glazing. They can be built at home in under 10 minutes using materials readily available on the ground. For many in Ukraine these replacement windows will be a life saver.

“We are thrilled!!! As soon as you put the windows in, it immediately became warmer. Thank you very much for your help. I wish you health and good luck. May God bless you. You work is invaluable.” - Tatiana, resident from Irpin

After developing the initial prototypes in Cambridge, the IU team went to Izyum in Eastern Ukraine to validate their idea. During our time in Izyum, we tested our designs, validated demand for IU windows, began teaching locals to build IU windows and, finally, have partnered with the local war administration to build 6,000 windows across the city.

“I’ve been helping people with installation of replacement [windows] in Kam’yanka. Now that we have these new designs I can have a great temporary replacement [window] built very quickly. This has enabled me to help many, many people.” - Sergei, resident from Kam’yanka

IU has found that demand exists right across Izyum and we have been raising awareness of our work with the support of the local government. The local authorities have made online tutorials publicly available and window replacement request forms. Our aim is for this solution to help fix people’s windows across the whole of Eastern Ukraine.
